David sat in back, tapping at his laptop, trying to scramble the signal coming off Maya.
As they wound up the icy road, Maya stared out the window. For a second, she caught her reflection. Her eyes—black, not blue. The same as the creatures.
“Julian,” she said, voice low.
“Yeah?”
“If I start to change… if I stop being me… I need you to promise me something.”
Julian kept his eyes forward. “I’m not making that promise. You’re not going to change.”
“Promise me,” Maya said, tears in her voice. “If I become a monster, you have to be the one to stop me. No matter what.”
