Why? That future is his why.

I cannot wait to see what the future holds for us. But do I want to see it?

A reminder that even the most broken things, weathered by time and tide, could become something smooth, something beautiful, something whole in its own way. “I will,” I said. And for the first time in a very, very long time, the future felt not like a battlefield to be crossed, but a wide, open shore, waiting for us to leave our footprints, side by side.

“That’s not a bad thing, Lyra. It means you get to choose who you want to be. And no matter what, we’ll always be together.” The fire crackles softly between us. Possibility races through me, bright and unstoppable, like sunlight breaking over frozen ground. For the first time since exile, the future doesn’t look like a narrow, lonely road. It looks wider, clearer, wilder, and unknown.

“The future. Not everything... but glimpses. Fragments. Tiny pieces of what’s to come.” I froze. The words took a moment to settle, like cold water slowly filling every crevice of my mind. “What do you mean, glimpses?” His gaze flickered to me, but it was clear he wasn’t seeing me. Not really. His focus was somewhere else—somewhere far beyond the here and now. “I’m not sure. But every time I think about something, when I focus... I can see paths. Outcomes. Possibilities. It’s like a thousand different futures are spinning in my mind, but I can’t control which one I’m seeing.”

For the future I wanted. Who's the prey anymore can't be said, right?
