They had grown accustomed to the fact that their mother was no longer among us, but their infectious happiness assured me that they had found solace in one another. I not sure he’s breathing or blinking at this point, but I’m still focused on my mother. I had just told them we were going to visit mommy's real city, and it would be fun. Fun, I could not guarantee, as I was here for messy and potentially dangerous matters, but my kids had to know their roots.

I shook my head. “Get out of my head,” I snapped under my breath. But her voice only grew clearer. You’re getting stronger… I can feel it. It’s beautiful. Rage flared instantly. “You don’t get to call anything about this beautiful,” I hissed. The quadruplets went still. They couldn’t hear her. Only me. Good. Because if they did… they’d realize just how deep this went. You still don’t understand, do you? she whispered, almost gently. What we are… what we were made to be…

“Why do there appear to be four of him?” “Father,” I began carefully, trying to steady my breath. “These are Kavian’s brothers. They’re… quadruplets.” Gasps rippled among the growing crowd. It's been four long years already, and I tried to forget Ruby, focusing more on Fallon and my new life with life. But then, that new life has a big problem, the same one I encountered with Ruby. We were childless. The elders had found out that my bond with Ruby was severed and they congratulated me for the bold move of taking a breeder. They believed, as much as I did, that it was Ruby's fault that we were unable to have kids. When I took Fallon, the elders gave me their blessings. But so far, I couldn't boast about having a child with her. I couldn't firmly blame her either, as much as I blamed Ruby.

“Yes.” I look at each of them, my Four, and know there’s only one answer left to give. “Yes,” I say. “I accept all of you.” Mother’s voice is solemn and powerful when she speaks the final words. “Then let it be done.” The moment the last syllable leaves her mouth, the floor beneath us erupts.
