One of the guards positioned behind her, hand resting near her arm, ready to control her movement if needed. Smithfield walked forward slowly. Rachel did not step back. He stopped in front of her and for a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Smithfield tilted his head slightly. “You’ve made your decision?” he asked. Rachel’s smile deepened just slightly. “Yes,” she said softly. Smithfield studied her again, slower this time, as though trying to read the space between her words.

Sophie leaned against the windowsill, watching droplets streak down the glass. Behind her, Alexander played soft guitar—badly, off-key, charming. “I’m happy,” she whispered. He stopped playing. “What did you say?” She turned around. “I said I’m happy.” Alexander smiled. “So am I.” Rachel sat in a Zurich café, reading validator entries in the public archive.
