A dome of silver flame swallowed the ruins. The trees were flattened. Shadows disintegrated. Magic warped. Time stilled. And then there was only light, then dust, then stillness. George stood at the door, followed by two Soldati. I nodded, took an umbrella, and walked out of the manor. The two Soldati sent by Sebastian flanked me. The car stopped at the entrance of the cemetery in the western suburbs. I walked up to my parents' tombstones and slowly knelt down.

At some point, she realised she was being dragged rather than carried. Her feet bumped along the ground now, heels catching on roots and stones. The men had grown tired. Impatient.
