“He’s got a point, Ethel. You and Lester are the heart and soul of this place. If anyone deserves a little happiness, it’s you two. Whenever you’re ready, we’ll make it happen.” It was a gentle, well-meaning joke, a staple of the group’s good-natured teasing about her and Lester’s inseparable partnership. But it landed in the room at the same moment Levi, who had been observing the exchange with a look of cynical amusement, decided to add his two cents. “Yeah,” Levi said, a familiar, snarky edge returning to his voice now that the intense grilling was over. “Maybe you can get the priest to exorcise his dusty old books while he’s at it. Make room for your stuff.”

Someone I have never met is in the kitchen, downing a bowl of cereal and raises his eyebrows when he sees me in Declan’s arms. "So, you're the human, I've heard so much about?" the unknown person says to me. "Uh huh, that's me. Riley." "I'm Levi, Declan’s best friend and his Beta. What’s up?" he says as he waves his spoon at me, flinging milk on the counter. "I'm trying to convince Declan to bring me with him to the store," I tell Levi, trying to get him to help me. "You got it, Riley. I'll invoke my best friend/beta-powers to convince him." He says with a laugh.

I flipped, a bit too frustrated. “Oh yeah?” Donni spoke. “Then what do you do in your spare time?” "I read," I replied, hoping my answer would somehow help the argument. Donni and Levi shared a look, both trying to hold back their reaction, but they both failed miserably and burst into laughter. “Did you catch that? She reads,” Donni smacked the table as if I was the first person in the universe to read a book. "What do you like to read?" Levi tried being nice again.

There's something I have to confirm, something I’ve always suspected that I have to confirm. I go to the reading arena, where she always sits, watching her as she muffles her laughter, joking with Roxie. I badly want to hear the joke. Knowing the both of them, they're probably laughing about what Roxie heard or something they both saw. I've been in their circle well enough to know that's how it usually goes. They were doing everything but reading whenever they came to the library. A hand taps my shoulder. I turn back to see it's Levi, my right hand man.
