“Everyone needs or wants something...” “Not me,” I lie. “Is that right?” he opens his emerald eyes, studying me thoughtfully while stroking his chin. There is some scruff there. “How about I fake date you in return?” I snort at his ridiculous offer but stop laughing when Weston stares at me. Oh shit, was he actually serious? Damn. So these sort of trades doesn’t only happen in movies, then? I straighten my shoulders. “No offense, b-but I don’t see how I would benefit from that.”

Substance. Lying on his bed, dressed in a T-shirt and sweatpants, Simon browsed through various female streamers on his laptop. His gold-rimmed glasses glinted under the reading lamp. One after another, he swiped left, unimpressed. The filters were cranked too high. Most of the women wouldn’t look half as good in real life. At thirty-two, Simon had the air of someone who’d seen too much and learned to be immune to superficial charm.

Ronan's POV "What?" I repeated, because surely I'd heard her wrong. Sarra tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I said no." I stood there, coffee mug still in my hand, trying to process what just happened. "You're saying no to being my girlfriend?" "Yes." "But we're already—" I gestured between us. "We're already doing this. We're fake dating. How is real dating any different?" She wrapped her arms around herself. "Because fake dating has an expiration date. Real dating doesn't."

Signing up, I tried not to use my real name, and a lot of real information as much as I can manage them, no sane person would do that. I click through a couple of sample profiles to reassure myself. There are some hot guys on here—unless the samples are totally imaginary people. Which I guess is possible. But damn, if the real guys look anything like these, I could totally let him fuck me senseless. The setup page proved to be a lot harder to complete. It's definitely not as simple a dating site, For one thing, it's so long. And for another, the questions asked to be answered. What's your deepest, darkest fantasy?

"Like you weren't looking too." "I'm only human," Simon shrugged. "I'd totally bang her." "So would I," Zephyra's yawn curls into a Cheshire cat grin. "I bet I could make her purr. “But he’s my boyfriend, damn it!” Evie pounds her fist on the table. “Mine! He was supposed to be ‘fake’ dating her, not dating her for real!” “So, maybe he’s fucking her, maybe he isn’t. Who cares?” Simon snorts. “The game’s the game, Evie. Everyone knows that. You can’t take it personally.”

Just looking at her made me smile. “And this app is well reviewed. You match based on common interests, and no photos are revealed until the third day of communication. So you won’t get women swiping right simply because you’re handsome.” Suzie explained. I rolled my eyes cause she was only saying that to A. butter me up and B. because Austin is a younger version of me. I want to tell them, no, but I can tell they are doing this for my benefit. “Fine, I’ll try it. I make no promises. After all, once you’ve met your soulmate, no one can ever compare.” I conceded to their grins.

“But, at least you have that really promising date coming up, right?” “Of course I do,” I replied automatically. Technically, every date was a really promising one. For my blog. “You do?” My mom looked skeptical. “A good date or a bad date?” “A good one,” Rosie assured her. “A real, positive, find love kind of date. She's trying out this new dating service by Kindling Dating. They have this brand new application that's basically guaranteed to find your true love. And she has a date through it.” “I do?” I looked at Rosie and she widened her eyes to tell me to play along. “Oh, right. I do. I totally do.”

"How will it be implemented?" Chester was not planning on hiding anything from Giselle. After some explanation, Giselle understood everything. What Chester had in mind was a dating simulation game. The user would be able to personalize the process of their romantic journey according to their preferences. They would only need to wait for a couple of minutes before they could go through the immersive experience once again. During that period, the user could allow other players to join them and become their assistants or relationship counselors. When he mentioned this, an idea popped up in Giselle's head.

I grip the steering wheel and remind myself to stay cool. She’s nothing. A means to an end. A soft, pretty, chaos gremlin of a means. “So…” she says, glancing at me. “You fake-date a lot?” I smirk. “You jealous already?” “No. Just wondering if this is your side hustle.” I snort. “If this were professional, you’d be signing an NDA and pretending we met on a mountain in Italy.” She perks up. “Italy? Can we change the backstory to that?”

At first I tried to ignore them, but it was too obvious to push aside. "I hear that is the lady Drent finally agreed to date," one of the fitness models whispered, staring openly at me. I felt like shrinking into my gear. "What did he see in her? She is so basic," another one said, and they laughed between themselves. My cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. Everyone knew, or thought they knew, that I was dating Drent, and they saw me as some desperate girl who had latched on. One of them walked straight up to me, tossing her hair back with practiced ease. "Drent deserves better," she said it loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear, then walked away with her group, their laughter trailing
