Rebel turned his gaze from Lily to Will, and the pain he saw there was so familiar, it took everything in him not to collapse with the weight of his own grief. He knew that look. The look of a scared and angry little boy who pushed others away when all he wanted was for someone, anyone to draw him close. He knew that look, because in many ways, after twenty years apart from the girl who’d made him whole again, when he looked at his own reflection, he was still that same angry little boy, fighting for someone to see him.

"Great!" Rebel takes me to a store and has us trying random makeup. Since I'm not a loser who cries when my girl wants to try eyeshadows on me, I'm soon walking with one blue eyelid and the other purple. I'm freaking fabulous. I help Rebel pick out groceries and notice that her walking speed and energy die down by the end of our tour. She seems exhausted, so tired that when we are by the cash registers, she doesn't even fight me when I offer to pay for her stuff.
