And sometimes, that feeling hit harder than words ever could.
My gaze returned to the painting, and I stared deeply at it. There was something about it that made my stomach flip.
It showed a bird—a crow or raven, I wasn’t sure—with its wings half-spread, standing over its chick. The baby bird was wounded, its little body curled and bleeding. Red streaked the feathers, the ground, and the sky above them.
But the mother bird didn’t fly away. She just stared, eyes wide and wild, like she was trying to protect her baby even though it was already too late. The background was all shadowy and gray, but the red—God, the red popped like it was real.
