The Way He Looked at Me
It’s been sitting inside me for a long time, waiting for the right moment and the right person to finally hear how foolish I’ve been.
I let out a deep breath. “When I was younger, I liked a guy. His name was Theo.”
Now that I’ve said it, I sit up a little straighter. It suddenly feels more serious than I expected.
“And when I say younger,” I add quickly, “I mean really young. Like… ten years old.”
Mae gives a small nod, calm and attentive.
“I’m not trying to justify anything,” I continue. “I just need you to understand how young I was. I’m not proud of some of the things I’ve done, but I don’t think I’m that kind of stupid anymore. At least, I hope not.”
