ALICE'S POV The screening program was running again, and the pediatric wing was full before nine. Morwen had been directing traffic since before the first families came through the door, and by the time they did, she had it moving. The nurses went back and forth with charts and coffee cups. Parents came in nervous and went home relieved. I worked through my list. Remy was my first follow-up of the day. He came in holding his mother's hand, a piece of paper pressed to his chest. The allergic reaction was behind him — his color good, his breathing clear, his eyes bright. He climbed onto the examination table without being asked and held the paper out.

"How did you end up like this? What happened to you, my child? What did you get yourself into?" Her grief, long suppressed since losing her son, poured out as she clung to Remy's presence.
