Then she pulled out a battered deck of cards, slick with age and strange symbols scrawled across the backs.
Inside, the hut was choked with incense and rot. Jars lined the walls, holding things better left unnamed, eyes floating, snakes coiled in cloudy liquid, the husks of spiders. Gideon tried not to gag.
“This is madness,” he spat, his voice too sharp.
The priestess’s head snapped toward him. Her one good eye blazed with fury.
“Madness?” she hissed. “Madness be de white man wid de black heart. Madness build machines of death, clank and scream like devils. Madness chain de babies ‘fore dey cry, breed dem like cattle. Madness call itself savior.”
