Jane could see the sweat on their brows as they chopped vegetables, plated dishes and monitored the preparation of other dishes which already had clean dishes waiting to receive them. As she made her way through the chaos, Jane could feel her heart racing. The intensity of the kitchen was like nothing she had ever experienced before. She watched as one chef pulled a tray of hot bread out of the oven, while another carefully plated a dish of seared scallops with precision and care. The sight of such skillful preparation left her in awe. There was no sense of chaos and disorder despite the hectic pace.

He paused long enough for the silence to feel deliberate. “Emma Markus.” The name came out like a curse wrapped in pity. “A so-called friend who encouraged every negative impulse.
