Lia hissed, advancing menacingly toward the new girl, but the boy I had poured coffee on gripped her hand, halting her. "I'm Riley Bakers, the girl who whooped your ass last summer. Did you forget that so easily? I didn't because I have a medal to remind me of how funny you looked." Riley declared, wearing a wide, proud smile. "Perhaps we can do this another time, but right now, I need to jet," she added. With that, she gripped my hand, tugging me away from Lia, the mysterious boy, and the crowd. When we reached a considerable distance, I turned back to see the crowd had dispersed. "Thank you back there. I mean, I don't know what I would have done if it weren't for you."

Riley clears her throat from the doorway, backpack already slung over one shoulder, morning sunlight streaming in behind her. "So... I'm guessing neither of you got much sleep last night." She shifts her weight, glancing between their disheveled appearances with raised eyebrows. "Mr. Prickles and I are heading to the library. Some of us have actual studying to do." She pauses, her expression softening slightly. "You good, Lyric? Need anything before I go?"

I nod; “Yes.” Layla wouldn't turn and face me; her back has small scars all over it; what is she hiding? I stay at the pond talking to Maddie until I see the sun rising over the mountains, then make my way back to the cabin. When I see wolves walking to the arena, I shake Riley waking him up and growling. “Get out of bed.” Riley hasn't opened his eyes as he groans, asking, “What the fuck, Darius? Is it still dark outside?”

“Whatever comes… we’ll face it.” Riley tilted her head, her smile enigmatic, deadly. “We’ll see.” And with that, she melted back into the shadows, leaving the faint metallic scent behind and the promise of chaos hanging heavy in the air. Avery stood frozen, Lydia writhing beneath her skin, Marcus’s hand tight around hers. The mansion felt alive now, every shadow a potential threat, every breath weighted with anticipation. Something ancient was stirring, something dark was circling, and Riley had just made it unmistakably clear: Avery was not safe.

Over the next couple of hours, Riley tells me all about the vampire war and how she and Leana boosted their power to fight them off but there were so many of them. “They are SO fast. Clint couldn’t see them and neither could Alpha Leonardo.” “I’ve heard of him,” I say. “Turns out, he’s mated to a vampire too. I’m telling you, the vamps are even more dramatic about everything than werewolves are,” she says. “It’s good to have you home, Riley,” I say. She looks at me thoughtfully as the warriors all finish their sparring. “What’s happened between you and my brother?” she asks. Riley is a lot like Aunt Grace. She sees a LOT, but unlike Aunt Grace, the filter on her mouth is nearly non-existent.

The afternoon came and Riley decided to take a bath in the pool. She wanted to relax. She was wearing a black bikini, and her body was amazing, not too slim, just right. Bruce came out to the yard to look for his wife/cousin to tell her that tonight a few friends would join him. When he saw her, he felt an insane urge to touch her. Riley paused when she saw him: -Leo! I am sorry, did you need me? she asked him

He had been observing the red-haired vampire as she spoke with the other female through the glass doors of the art gallery. “Mason!” Dylan phoned once more. Mason yelled out, "Coming," and started to move with the rest of the group. When Mason joined them, Dylan commented, "So, she was hot, you know, for a dead person." Dylan was a werewolf who was 37 years old and had stopped growing since he was in his late 20s. Like Mason, he was tall and slim, but when his dark hair wasn't tied back, it hung to his shoulders.
