There were tears all around me, moans of pain, complains, bafflement, anxious murmurs, but the worst came from the crushed section—screams, wailing, pleadings, and cries for help. I didn’t think about it. I didn’t think about anything. I just walked straight to the fallen building, and slowly made my way amongst the rubble. I tried to help anyone out of there. It wasn’t long before others joined in. I oriented a few of them to start a chain getting rubble out, and rapidly, others in the street joined us, moving massive amount of material out of the way, and creating a second chain guiding the survivors out without having too many people constantly moving on unstable structures.

The city’s dawn came in shades of gray and gold, soft light spilling over rooftops still scarred but steadfast. Mira stood at the highest balcony, watching the streets awaken. The remnants of fire, smoke, and battle lingered faintly in the air, but the rhythm of life persisted beneath it all. People moved carefully but with determination, carrying forward the work that would define the city not by what had been destroyed, but by what survived.

She looked at him, confused. “I don’t know,” she said. Her voice was hoarse. “I’m sorry. I was alone. In the chains. I didn’t see anyone else.” Ryder’s face fell. Just a fraction. Instead, strong arms reached in through the expanding cavity and pulled her out. It was a rough exit, scraping her sides, but she wasn’t about to complain.

"You're banished." I tried to push past them, but they shoved me into the dirt, then laughter followed as I crawled to my feet, clutching my stomach. Suddenly, rain began to fall, soaking me to the bone. As the mansion lights blurred through my tears. "Fine," I whispered to the storm. "If none of you want me, I'll go but remember this..." My hand tightened protectively over my belly. "I am not alone, I have my baby by my side."
