I just took a sip of my drink and smiled. The silence stretched out, getting more and more awkward. "What about you, Jax?" Mark asked, trying to break the tension. "You’ve been pretty mysterious all trip. Is there someone back on campus waiting for the star defender or have you seen any girl you like?" Jax didn't look up. He traced the rim of his glass with his finger. "I don't have a girlfriend, Mark." "A boyfriend then?" Swiss joked, but his voice was a bit nervous. He was trying to be light, but it wasn’t helping.

Ximena's extended hair instantly retracted, and she shrank back into her small, delicate form. She stood there with her hands clasped together, head lowered, looking obedient and timid. For some reason, that sight made me feel uncomfortable. I pulled her behind me and turned to face the man standing there. He wore a long black robe. His eyes were narrow and slanted upward, his body bulky, his face downright ugly. The man carried himself with an air of superiority, casting me an annoyed glance.

I struggled to accept the reality of marrying a man old enough to be my father, yet I maintained calm composure throughout the ceremony. Falling for someone you’ve never seen is peak disaster energy.” “I’m not falling for anyone.” “Good.” She pointed at me again. “Because emotional damage is expensive. And I know you. You fall for men with mystery, danger, and cheekbones sharp enough to stab you.” “I do not!” “You SO do.” Mira narrowed her eyes. “And this man sounds like he invented cheekbones.” I let out a breath and slung my bag over my shoulder. “I’ll be okay. I promise.”

“What?” “He likes cheese,” he said, all innocent. “And Papi said he fits our family because he’s wild and stubborn too.” I turned my head slow, like a zombie realizing it woke up in the wrong movie. Across the yard, leaning against a black sports car that looked like it had been birthed in some Italian showroom fantasy, stood the man who had ruined my emotional stability for the week. Zane Romano. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, one arm folded, the other holding a cold coffee that had appeared from nowhere. That smile on his face was not a neutral smile. It was the smile that said you’ll be mad but I still win.

No girl.” She drew me in closer, holding up my chin. “Sweet is chocolate, sweet is ordering pizza when I’m hungry. This man is a romantic, don’t you see?” Part of me still remained scared. His gestures only made way for feelings I didn’t plan towards and that made me even more scared.

It was his first time in a place like this, and yet… it sounded so natural, so sure. "Perfect! Sexy and adventurous is what we specialize in," the man chimed, radiating energy like a live wire. "I'm the manager of the club, by the way. Roman, but you can call me Auntie Romie." He extended a hand, palm glittering with rings. “Come in, darlings, come in. The next show’s about to begin!” Auntie Romie twirled on his heel and led the way like a Broadway hostess.
