Amari asked scrunching her face and reaching over to check her phone. "It says if any man be in Christ , he's a new creature, old things have passed away behold all things are become new." Amari sniffles "and I opened to a page in the Bible, Genesis, God is Almighty and powerful and then I prayed after and I felt that peace."

He took out his bible and read a passage there. "Psalm 82:1-5: 1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment: 2 'How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? 3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. 4 Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.' 5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken."

His eyes looked hungry when he saw me. "Come here Michael," he said quietly. "Tonight we finish your penance properly." I walked up the steps until I stood right in front of him. The altar felt cold under my hands when I touched it. Father Elias opened the Bible and turned to a page he had marked. He read the verse in his deep calm voice. "Romans 6 verse 13. Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness."
