I inhale, steadying myself. “Of course,” I say, forcing calm. “Roses are in the cooler. Do you prefer red or white?”
“Red, obviously.” She flicks her hand as though brushing off dust. “Passion, love, all those things you wouldn’t understand.”
Her words sting, but I don’t let it show. I move to the cooler, pull out a dozen crimson roses, and lay them on the wrapping paper. My hands are steady even though my heart pounds.
