When I opened my eyes again, the fog had stopped advancing.
For the first time, it seemed to hesitate as if listening.
Good, I thought. Listen.
Because when it moved again, I’d be ready to burn it to ash.

The cliffs bled red beneath the moon.
From my camp I could see the valley wrapped in fog, thick as silk, curling through the forest like a sleeping beast.
Every breath of wind smelled of salt, fire, and power.
At least, that was what I kept telling myself.
