She looked at the rosemary jar. The flower Adrian had left at her door after their first date was long gone. She had kept it for two weeks past its life because she had liked what it stood for and then she had thrown it away because keeping dead flowers was not who she was. The rosemary jar was still there. It had been there before Adrian and it was there now. It would always be there. She drank her coffee at the table. She looked at the notebook on the shelf. The one Adrian had given her. She had been filling it for months. Her thoughts and her questions and the things she had been working through and one question she had written and not answered.

There were photos of them at an amusement park, wearing matching headbands like a couple. And there was one that made my blood run cold. It was a photo of them in my bedroom. Reagan was wearing my nightgown and kissing Zayne on the cheek. The earliest photo dated back to the second year after Zayne and I got married. My hands started trembling uncontrollably as I opened the diary. On the very first page were the words, "Dedicated to my only light, my Reagan." Every page after that was filled with their so-called "love story."

Slowly, I opened it to the first page. My name stared back at me, written in Kester's familiar handwriting. MINE. I flipped to the next page, my fingers trembling so hard I nearly tore it. "I took the ribbon she wore today. She looked so perfect in it. I couldn't help myself. It still smells like her. I kept it in my box. My secret. She can never know." My heart stopped. The ribbon. I thought I'd lost it years ago. I slapped the book shut, squeezing my eyes closed as my breathing grew ragged. My hands clenched the diary so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

"Can you not? If you want to yell at me some more, fine, but it's going to wait until I've had some sleep. I've been up for thirty hours, and I'm feeling mean." Maggie's cheeks flushed. "I don't want to yell at you. I want to talk to you. Which is what I should have done in the first place. I'm sorry." The sudden turnaround had Kennedy's head spinning. Or maybe that was the lack of sleep. "Okay?" "You want to turn the house into an inn." It wasn't a question. Kennedy realized that all her notes were spread out over the kitchen table. "Where did you get those?" It was a stupid question. From her room, obviously. That was where she'd stashed them.

His eyes move toward the worn cover. 'Rose's?' I nod. 'She wrote about her childhood. About the balls her family attended.'

Too quiet. The smell of coffee drifted through the air warm, rich, the kind that should’ve felt like comfort. But the sight that greeted me turned it sour. Rosemary . She was humming softly, sleeves rolled up, her hair tied back with a neat ribbon like she’d been living here her whole life. The counter gleamed. A plate of pancakes rested on the island Liam’s favorite kind. Her back was turned, but the moment she heard my footsteps, she whirled around with a smile too bright to be real.

They went to their seats after being introduced officially. Rosemary held her hand and sat next to her. As if making up for lost time, she picked out food and placed it on Diana's plate. Diana said softly. Rosemary even spread butter on toast with orange marmalade. The fried eggs were overeasy.
