Violet, " How dare you touch her! I will break your hand!" Knox's outburst was too terrifying to stand still. His voice cracked through the air, raw and feral. He threw some random punches until he barely managed to take a breath, his chest heaving, knuckles trembling with barely contained rage. I threw my arms around his waist, my fingers digging into his coat, pulling him away from Xavier with all the strength I had. My pulse hammered violently against my ribs. Lottie POV Seeing Knox on the floor, his face a mottled landscape of bruises and his lip split, I felt a surge of nausea. The healing process had begun, his supernatural nature knitting skin and bone back together, but it was slow, and the damage was extensive. His one eye swollen nearly shut, a deep shade of purple spreading like a storm cloud under the thin skin, and there were cuts that looked deep enough to have hit bone. It was clear he'd been in a brutal bar fight, one I knew he had started himself.

He is lying. I stared at his hidden hand. A heavy wooden scrub brush falling from six inches up does not crush a man's knuckles. It does not split the skin open like that. "Your knuckles are bruised" Ellie commented as she inspected the painful looking bruises on Xandre's scarred knuckles. "What did you do?" She demanded in a stern voice. "I might've punched the wall to take out my frustration" "I don't like seeing you get hurt, Dre" she said, dabbing the tender skin with alcohol wipes. He stared at her quietly and she winced. "Sorry" He kissed her forehead, watching her as she cleaned the cuts. "It doesn't really hurt" he told her.

The crack echoes. Bark splinters under his knuckles. Blood wells, dark against skin. “Knox!” I catch his hand, turning it over, staring at the damage he’s done to himself. “I’ll heal,” he says flatly—as if that excuses it. “I know.” I let his hand go.
