Their Little White Lie
Caroline asked, trailing Sabrina as she left the dining room.
Sabrina paused at the front door, her head low. “This was a mistake,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
She wasn’t crying, but I could see tears welling up, ready to spill from her eyes.
Sabrina gripped the door handle, preparing to leave the chaos behind.
Her eyes met mine one last time, filled with disappointment and a flicker of something deeper, maybe hurt, before she turned, walked out, and shut the door, closing herself off from me completely.
