Shoving something into his pocket, he turns my way... The clothing store? It appears Santa Claus is doing his rounds, collecting his gifts from all the little boys and girls on his list, regardless of whether they're naughty or nice. Hastily, I move on, cross the street to merge with the hubbub of people, then double-back on myself to wait, watching the store entrance as he enters, strolling in as though he owns the fucking place.

Then, turning to Corey he said, “Mr. Cane, if you would give us a few moments, I shall summon you when Serendipity and I are done chatting.” “Yes, of course,” Corey said, bowing his head in agreement. Though Santa Claus still held her hand in his, Serendipity let go for just a second, turning back to Corey, throwing her arms around him, and saying, “Thank you.” He said nothing, only winked at her, and then, in an instant, he was gone, leaving Serendipity standing back in astonishment. Before she could put words to her surprise, Santa was saying, “Shall we?” and offering her his hand, which she gladly took, and he led her through the golden door from which he had appeared moments ago.

I questioned, almost tearing up. “If you have any unfinished business with them, I guess you should sort it out.” Mr. Lucian put out his hand. Taking his hand, I faked a smile. “Thank you,” I replied, shutting my eyes closed, as I watched him leave. “We are traveling next week, Ms. Etta.” Clara chipped in. “What for?” I asked. “You need to feature in the America movie coming up this Christmas,” Clara explained. “Clara, can you leave me and Elsie for a few minutes?” I signaled her to leave with my hand.

I asked others, “Are you guys okay with dressing up? I won't force you if you feel uncomfortable with it.” Harry, “I'll be perfect for the grinch role, boss.” Teresa, “I'll choose to be Santa's helper, boss.” Morgan, “I'll go for elves too, boss.” When I looked at theo, he said, “Guess I'm going to be Santa then.” He asked me, “What about you, boss.” “I'll choose to be an elf too.” Harry, “Let's give something in return after visiting our store.” Morgan, “Yeah, that's great.” She turned to me and said, “Boss, let's do that.”

But tonight, exhaustion mixed with a restless heat low in her belly, making her shift uncomfortably. "Dory, still at it? The reindeer need their rest, and so do you." Santa's voice boomed from the doorway, warm and gravelly, like a hearth fire. At 50-something in appearance but timeless in spirit, Nicholas Claus filled the frame, broad-shouldered, belly rounded from centuries of cookies, his white beard trimmed neat, eyes twinkling with that knowing glint. He wasn't the jolly myth; he was real, weary from the endless rush, shoulders carrying the weight of a world's wishes.

Even though I’m wearing a facade of adultlike indifference, I can’t help but feel a sense of childlike excitement building up inside of me as we inch closer to Santa’s chair. Finally, it’s our turn, and we step up to Santa Claus, who greets us with a hearty laugh. “Ho, ho, ho! Well, look who we have here. It’s Alpha Karl and…?” Santa’s eyes fall on me, and he gives me a quizzical look. “This is my elf,” Karl says, eliciting a punch in the arm from me. He smirks and rubs the spot where I punched him before he turns back to the man playing as Santa. “Jane the Elf.”

“Far too beautifully,and this new hair color makes you look utterly irresistible." My breath caught. I could feel the years between us like a live wire. Him old enough to be my father, me barely legal, playing elf to him as Santa in front of hundreds of people, and to think, I wanted him. It was wrong. It was insane. And God, I wanted it. The curtain rustled again,another elf calling us back. He dropped his hand, but not before his thumb traced the edge of my lower lip, just once. “Break’s over,” he said, voice gravel and velvet. “But we’re not done, little elf.”

"Mama, look! Santa Claus is angry!" I laughed when Thalia pointed out the man dressed as Santa Claus and sitting on his big sleigh while taking pictures with the children. The person behind the santa costume looks so tired that he is scolding the children while they're taking pictures with him. "Baby, do you want to take a picture with Santa Claus?" She shook her head. "I don't want." "But why?" "He's mean!" she laughingly said, and then pulled me towards the corner of the chocolates shelves. "Mama! Buy me this one, please!"
