Jareth’s breath caught. His eyes locked on hers, wide as though he saw more than words in her gaze—something that might burn him clean or consume him whole. He lowered his head fully to the floor.
“I swear,” he whispered. “By my blood, by the steel I once carried in his name, I swear it to you.”
The silence that followed felt like a seal pressed into wax.
