I bite down on his hands hard, and he pulls back. “HELP, HELP. SOMEBODY HELP ME. HELP ME! “SAM, WAKE UP.” Somebody’s shaking me, but I can’t escape.

“We move slowly, deliberately. No rushing. Let them react to us instead of the other way around.” Bastion knelt near the edge of the rock, tracing the terrain with his fingers. “The shard is a tool, not just a weapon. Its pulse is responsive—it can detect Echo-Binder energy. Use it carefully. It will warn you of traps or presence, but it also reacts to fear. Keep your resolve steady.” I closed my eyes briefly, letting the warmth from the shard seep into my veins. The pulse synced with my heartbeat, a steady thrum that reminded me of the vault, of my mother’s echoes, of the choices I had made. My confidence returned in small increments.

It split in two, then four, until it collapsed into dust.
