"Zara?" a frantic, female whisper cuts through the dark.
My hands shake so violently the hairbrush nearly slips from my grip. "Emily?"
The shadow turns, and as my eyes adjust to the amber haze, I see her. Her uniform is torn, her wrists are red and raw from zip-tie burns, and a massive, ugly purple bruise deforms the left side of her jaw. But her eyes are burning with a fierce, unbreakable light. Behind her, two Southern scouts roll in a heavy, industrial catering trunk, their breathing heavy and ragged.
