We saw an indentation on the ground where she must have fallen while running. Was she naked, or did her helper give her clothes? I was troubled. Her scent led all the way to the highway and disappeared. I smelled the burnt tire scent and howled at the moon. Scarlett had hitched a ride. I plopped by the side of the road, distraught. I did not know what to do.

Not enough to place it. But enough to feel recognition crawl through me like an old wound opening beneath healed skin. Emily looked at me carefully, concern replacing the small amusement she had carried moments earlier. "Scarlett, you're starting to scare me." I blinked and looked toward her. "What do you mean?" "You went pale." She folded her arms slowly. "You looked like someone just dragged a ghost out of your past." My throat tightened. Maybe someone had. "I know that voice," I said quietly. Emily frowned immediately. "Who was it?"

A Few days later Lucian kept his distance. Even though it was the last thing Emberlynn would have wanted, she believed it was very much needed. She turned around on the bed before finally sitting up. She gazed at her side, lifting the shirt she wore slightly. She had already healed, but the scar was still there.
