My stomach drops. I swallow hard and turn my head slightly away from her. Why is she here? Why would she save me? As far as I know, Daphne is a monster. A killer. Someone who enjoys blood and chaos and doesn’t care who gets hurt in the process. She notices my reaction immediately. “Cat got your tongue?” she says, pushing herself off the wall and stepping closer. “Didn’t expect me to be the one pulling you out of that mess, did you?” I clench my jaw.

Daphne was on the sofa, bathed in the flickering blue light of a fashion show, a bag of chips balanced on her lap like a sacred relic. She didn't even look up at first. “You're late, Soph. Mom’s already upstairs in a ‘green bottle’ coma, and I'm not cleaning the—” The words died in her throat. Her jaw didn't just drop, it practically hit the linoleum. She scrambled into a sitting position, her eyes bulging as she took in the scene: the sleek deep blue silk of my dress, the sharp, expensive bob of my hair, and Isaac, who looked like he’d stepped off the set of a high-end spy thriller.

The only thing I was glad about was it was me she drew from and not our pup. “Cleo… she… she’s summoned the gateway to hell. If they step through it, he will kill her.” As the chanting stopped my mind became clear my vision turning back to normal as the goosebumps disappeared. "So, you really think that I'm the one?" She nodded, her eyes never wavering. "I'd stake my life on it." A broad smile spread across her face. "You will defeat all manner of supernatural creatures, including demons and the like. Perhaps even the devil himself. But I'm getting ahead of myself."

She stared at Tabitha and asked desperately, "Are you a demon to torture me?" "I'm no demon," Tabitha thought, scoffing. "I'm the grim reaper here to collect." She didn't say it aloud, just replied coldly, "If you want to be fixed, cooperate. If not, I'm packing up and walking out right now." "No, don't leave! I'll do it! I'll listen to you!" Daphne shouted back quickly. She turned to Lily. "You put the cream on me." Lily stared at the cluster of blisters covering Daphne's legs. She stammered, "I—I can't..."

She even planted her elbows on my desk. "It's freaky." "I love freaky." The girl was a little bit too much like me. I played the video, slowing down certain portions. When it was done, she cocked her head, staring at the last frame I'd left on the screen. It was the most terrifying one of them all because it showed his face. If you could call the deformed head sporting sharp teeth and foaming at the mouth human in any regard. "Wow," Daphne said a few seconds later.

Jada felt like an outsider, being ignored by Evelyn. “Well, hello Brayden. So glad to see that you have returned,” Daphne purred, seductively running her fingers across the back of his neck and down his arm. He shook her off, giving her a scornful look. She looked at Jada as she touched him with a defiant smirk. “We never went to Hawaii, but we took some wonderful cruises, didn’t we, Brayden? Remember Figi?” Daphne asked, trying to upset Jada.

"Ahhh!" Daphne let out a piercing scream, startled by the sudden chaos. As the round table flipped, Abel scooped Daphne into his arms and stumbled several steps back in panic. Elara seized the moment, rushing forward to pick up Bambi and running toward the nearest kitchen. "Abel, I'm so scared!" Daphne whimpered while clinging tightly to Abel's neck. Abel gently patted her shoulder. "Don't be afraid, Daffy. I'll give them both a good slap, and they'll behave!"

“Figured it would be better to make introductions so you know who they are instead of wondering who’s following you around.” Daphne spins around on the stool to fix me with a hard, bewildered stare. “You’re having me followed?” I focus on serving up a plate of scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and fresh strawberries which I set down in front of her at the island. She still tries to demand answers from me, but the smoothie I procure from the fridge shuts her up before she can launch into a full-blown inquisition. I make my own plate and sidle into the seat next to her.
