She twisted and screamed my name as they dragged her backward toward the treeline.
“No,” I gasped, forcing my legs to move.
Scottie grabbed me, trying to hold me back as another blast rocked the ground. “You cannot reach her,” he shouted. “You will die.”
“I do not care,” I snarled, shoving him aside with everything I had left.
Hallen’s laughter rang out through the smoke, sharp and delighted. “Data extraction complete,” she called. “Phase escalation successful.”
I saw her retreating toward the forest as well, her form blurring as she moved, untouched by the chaos she had created.
