She told Sandra, feeling a little shy for reasons she could not identify. “Oh, wow! I didn’t realize … Congratulations.” Sandra began and then trailed off, looking Becca over, as though she expected her stomach to shoot out all of a sudden. “Yeah. I hope you won’t mind giving me some pointers, though.” “Sure. Of course not. I take it it’s your first pregnancy.” “Well, I did have a miscarriage over two years ago, but I’m hopeful this one will stay,” Becca explained. It felt easy to talk to this woman. She had a way of making one feel at ease in her presence.

“... Believe me, it's not the end of the world Madeline.” Beatrice began but got alert when Madeline didn't respond. Her eyes moved from the table towards her belly. Her soft heavy breaths could be heard and finally she raised up her head to look at Beatrice. “...What do you mean it's not the end of the world for me? It is!...” “Please calm down...”

A second chance. In a new world. In a fragile, dangerous life that wasn’t really hers. She clenched her fists. “I won’t waste it,” she whispered to herself. “No matter who thinks I should’ve stayed dead.” Far above them, unseen, two faint lights flickered in the air around her—one soft and pale, one dark and deep. She wouldn't have been here without the help of Carson, maybe she would have been long dead. She thought of how and what to repay him with, even as she tried to work on the project before her. Even after she had intended to take her life. Carson is giving her a reason to live again, Carson is giving her a second chance in life. He stands to motivate her on how she will achieve so much and never settle for Less.
