At last the cliffs opened, and the Hall rose before them. It was not a castle, not in the human sense. It was something older, carved directly into the mountain, its arches sharp as fangs, its walls etched with runes that pulsed faintly as though alive. Twin statues of wolves guarded the entrance—massive, snarling beasts hewn from obsidian, their eyes set with rubies that glowed like fresh blood. The envoy turned, his crimson cloak pooling like spilled wine. “Enter. The Council is waiting.”

I restrained myself and turned back. A few hours later, a bell rang inside and doors opened. Guards motioned us toward the main hall. I forced my hands to my sides and walked in. The Shaman from the Blue Moon pack had come. Tonya stood in the witness box, flanked by two guards. She looked small and terrified. Our eyes met and something in my chest broke. Elder Derek said, “Blue Moon Shaman, step forward.” The Shaman stepped forward, his hands trembling. Derek said, “Sorin, you know why we have called you. Tell us, do you know about mates?”

Even their guards would remain outside. They pulled up next to a number of other limos and fancy cars. Shane was sparing no expense on the evening's festivities. Shamira was flanked as she walked inside, where a large well-lit room was waiting for her. It was like she had walked into a medieval hall, complete with heavy wooden tables and benches, and a large free-standing fire-pit in the center of the room. A raised area at the other end of the room sat five chairs. Shane was in one with Banshee at his side. Next to them were the Representative, the Alpha, and the Shepherd. Archimedes had decided to stay and look after the dragons.
