“Liam, that’s a big deal. I’ve never been to an official family event with you guys.” He shrugged, trying to play it cool. “It’s just dinner. My family will be there, and I thought it’d be nice if you joined us.” I felt a mix of excitement and terror. “Okay. Yeah. I’ll come.” When I got back to my dorm, the reality of what I’d agreed to hit me like a freight train. “Thanksgiving with Liam, Monica!” I shrieked, flinging myself onto my bed. “What am I supposed to wear? "Here." We crowd around the small screen, watching grainy footage of models stumbling while dramatic runway music plays. Monica leans in, her hand coming up to cover her mouth as she tries not to laugh too loudly. The tension breaks completely. Monica's posture softens, her back curving as she settles more comfortably. Heather kicks off her shoes and tucks her feet under her. Monica refills her wine, her movements looser than before. Maybe it was because Monica simply didn’t care about other people’s business, or perhaps she just wasn’t the type to make a fuss over things that didn’t concern her. Either way, I felt at ease with her. Who would’ve thought that an eccentric goth could make me feel this comfortable? "That's enough. It's the holidays. Why are you making a scene? Don't get so worked up. Come sit down and eat. Your mom and I even have some good news for you." At dinner, Mom placed two drumsticks onto Sabrina's plate, one after the other. "Rina, eat more," she said. "You've gotten thinner again. Is work too stressful? If something's bothering you, just tell me, alright?" Sabrina merely coughed once, and Mom was already on her feet, heading to the fridge to grab her a chilled bottle of juice. Ever since we were kids, Sabrina always had a glass of juice with her meals, while I never did.

Lily is completely right; you deserve to be driven out for good.” I stood completely still, saying not a single word in response. Tom took a tiny, almost imperceptible step forward. I brushed my fingers against his wrist. He froze mid-movement, his eyes darting to me, blazing with suppressed fury. Monica saw my silence as weakness, and her voice rose even louder, shrill with triumph. “Look at her! She has nothing to say for herself! She knows I’m right! She’s nothing but a useless leech sucking Jack dry!”

Monica’s laughter boomed behind her, loud and delighted. Stacey’s legs trembled. She knew she couldn’t handle this. She did the only thing she could think of. “Monica, please,” she said, breathing shakily. “I’m sorry. I promise I won’t ever get on your bad side again. I can’t do this.” She gestured helplessly at the filth. “Give me something else. Not this. Please.” Monica placed a hand dramatically over her chest. “Awww, I’m soooo touched.” She wiped imaginary tears. “But it’s too late. If you had begged ten minutes ago, I might have listened.”

Then Monica stood up, slowly, clearing her throat. "Everyone," she said. Her voice trembled, drawing all eyes to her. "I have something I need to say." Elliot paused mid-sip of wine. "Everything alright, dear?" "I, uh… I suggested a family lunch because…" Her voice caught. She reached for a napkin, dabbing her eyes. "Because I wanted to thank you. All of you. For being such a wonderful family to me." Elliot reached out, brushing his fingers gently along her arm. "Aw, honey—"

she whispered. I nodded. “Apparently, they’re ’thank you’ gifts for helping me prepare for the trip.” Monica’s face did a slow, emotional collapse. Then she stood, walked around her desk, and hugged me hard enough to bruise a rib. “You’re ridiculous,” she said into my hair. “And Crest is ridiculous. But I’m grateful.” Cherry, meanwhile, was already wearing her earrings. “I feel like I belong on a yacht,” she announced. “Not inside a yacht. On top of it.”

After that, the old grandmother led everyone back into the house. Before she left, she turned and said, "Take care of yourself and your dignity as a woman. What do you get as Darryl's mistress? You are just a b*tch." The door slammed shut after that. Monica stood outside the house; her body trembled. She was so ashamed and angry; she wanted to cry.
