“It always is.”
I drag a hand through my hair, breathing hard now.
“You said I was too late,” I say. “Too late for what?”
She studies me for a long moment.
“To save her from knowing,” she says.
My chest tightens painfully.
“She knows,” I say.
The woman nods. “Of course she does.”
“Then what am I too late for?” I ask again.
She leans forward slightly.
“You are too late,” she says, “to pretend this began with you.”
