She was still there, listening. “We need your help,” I said quietly. “Your daughter accidentally went to the Fae world, and we need you to—” The door creaked open just a little, and for the first time, she spoke in English. Her voice was soft but firm. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said. “I don’t have a daughter. I don’t have sons. I can’t have children.” She paused for a second before finishing coldly, “Leave before I call the police.”

"She's your daughter." The lie tastes bitter on my tongue, but it's a lie I've told so many times it almost feels true. Except she's not his daughter. Not really. Sorry to disappoint you, but we won’t be staying here for long.” Her eyes shot up. “What do you mean you won’t be staying for long?” I scoffed. “It’s none of your business. Just stay away from my daughter.” Her shoulders stiffened. “Liv, you can’t be serious.” “I’m very serious.” “You can’t take her away—” I cut her off sharply. “She is my daughter. Not yours. Not the family’s. Not anyone’s. Mine.” Her lips opened and closed, like she was trying to find an argument strong enough to hold me in place. But she had nothing.
