I pulled my consciousness back, opening my eyes to the ashen, ruined landscape of the northern camp.
I let go of the glowing blue chain. It didn't fall. It hovered perfectly taut, suspended by the immense, opposing gravities of the liquid mantle below and the biological grid above.
I stood up, my legs shaking.
Kael was standing near the edge of the ledge, looking down at his healed hands. The Vanguard wolf had survived a thermal overload that should have turned his bones to ash. He looked up at me, his golden eyes blazing with the new frequency.
"I don't feel like a shield anymore, Jace," Kael rumbled, rolling his massive shoulders. "I feel like a spear."
