This is the first bookstore I have been to, the books before were for learning, not stories. "Okay, how about telling me some books you have read and if you enjoyed them?" He looks at me waiting. "Yeah, see I haven't read stories. I read books that are to help you learn but never read purely for pleasure." "Okay, I have a few suggestions, follow me." He walks through and I follow, not missing Troy's eyes on me, while he has his phone in his hand. "Here, so, these are small books. Each one has short stories in, between one thousand and ten thousand words each story. Based on a specific genre." I watch as he picks up three and holds them out.

Short terrifying stories that leave you insomnolent . . . definitely a must read to while away time and get sleepless with fear, hahaha. I don't own any of this stories. Breathless. And already craving more.

To her dismay, Jane found herself walking down the hall to English with Lucy by her side, still talking, talking, talking. "I didn't know you were such a big reader, Jane," Lucy said, smiling at her. "I guess because your book-report books are always so short. But length isn't what matters in a book. I love a lot of short books, too. Just look at poetry. A poem can be any length. There are millions of wonderful poems that are only a few lines long. Like Emily Dickinson's poems. She can say more in two lines than most people can say in a hundred pages. It took me a second to catch on to what Kendra was trying to do. Sure enough, I checked Kendra’s social media handle using my alternative account and found that she was live. Nevertheless, she had only a handful of viewers so far. Displeased with the low viewer count, Kendra egged the other family members on to stir up more drama. With the family behind her, Summer straightened her back and felt assured.

*Sophie* I collapsed onto my own bed, the cheap mattress springs groaning under my weight like they were as exhausted as I was now. The room was tiny, a glorified closet in the freshman hall of Westbridge University, but it was mine now, at least for the next nine months. Posters of indie bands and a half hearted attempt at string lights covered the cinderblock walls. My desk was buried under open textbooks, empty Red Bull cans, and a tangle of charging cords. The single window looked out onto the rainy quad, gray afternoon light filtering through the blinds I’ve forgotten to close.
