Her heavy New England accent came through the thick wood of the door as her footsteps clipped along the marble floor. He watched me for a second too long, worry creasing his brow. I wanted to tell him. About the whispers in the dark. About Damien’s hand on my jaw. About how his voice lingered in my head, calling me mine. But the words stuck in my throat. And then, as if summoned by my silence, the air shifted. The lecture hall fell quiet, a ripple of tension spreading through the rows. I didn’t need to look up. I knew.
