Only static came back. The stone walls and the metal backings of the mirrors were blocking the signal. We were cut off. "Look at her, Damien," Silas said. His voice was right behind me.

"Don't follow the sound. Come back to the hearth." Grace didn't blink. Her gaze was fixed on the sky, toward the faint glint of a star that shouldn't be visible in the morning light. "It’s not a sound anymore, Papa," she whispered, her voice layered with a harmonic resonance that chilled Panni to the bone. "It’s a network. Silas isn't a man in a vault. He’s the pulse in the glass. He’s the code in the sky. He’s waiting for the Zenith Protocol."
