Wet Confessions
The air smelled faintly of chalk and old varnish, a scent I’d come to associate with the sound of his voice.
He was already at the podium when I arrived, sleeves rolled, tie loosened just enough to look careless. He never looked careless.
“Today,” he said, “we examine the nature of temptation as described in the Epistle of James. ‘Each one is tempted when, by his own desire, he is dragged away and enticed.’ Notice desire itself is not the sin. The surrender to it is.”
He let the words settle. Then his eyes lifted, searching the room.
For a heartbeat, they found mine.
