Aisha's POV The Paris sky that evening was a golden orange, reflecting the shadows of streetlights on the bustling city sidewalk. I sat on the balcony of my apartment, watching the hustle and bustle below while sipping on warm tea. Five years had passed since I left my old life. Five years since I chose to disappear. Along the way, I had found a new self, but the shadows of the past still clouded my mind. I was no longer the weak woman who felt unworthy of love. Now, I was a respected heart surgeon.

They agreed and left without a second glance, with laughter and music drifting from the courtyard as I lay gasping in the dirt like a dying dog. I curled my hand into a fist with the last of my strength. For the first time in years, a strange calm settled over me. I knew I would find a way out, I would leave this place, and every single thing they had done to me over the past five years would be paid back. Not once, not twice, but a thousand times over!

Rex confessed. It was all Rex. He took the men down like a beast. The leader gave a skeptical glance and then glanced his way at me. "You must be very proud of your man, señorita. But sadly, you won't be able to see him." Fear broke out. "What do you mean?" "As I said, we only came for six women." Six? But only five. Claire is back in the hotel with Don. She should be safe since they are unaware of it. Only five are on this boat.

The pain was so intense that my vision blurred. When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed. Upon seeing that I was awake, Maisie held my hand and said, "Don't worry, the baby is safe." Robert exclaimed in exasperation, "How can you not tell us about such an important matter?" I was stunned. After a long silence, I finally asked the question that had been troubling me, "What's the story behind that scrunchie that Xavier keeps holding on to?" Robert and Maisie knew I wouldn't rest until I got an answer from them. So, they had no choice but to explain the backstory of that scrunchie.

He fixed his man bun and asked, “what else did you see?” “Two guys, one with a missing hand and the other peed himself with blood.” I bored my eyes on my notebook where I listed the names of the possible victims. I brought out a red pen and crossed out the names of the remaining students with the initials BR. I looked carefully at the list of students with initials CM then GS. In the scroll, CM was in fifth place followed by GS then BR. Will Beatrice die before CM? Who are CM and GS? “Three lives at a time,” Grip mumbled.

“Mabel, you didn’t.” Mabel lifted her glass. “I did.” Ava blinked once, twice, then took a slow sip of her drink. “Well, would you look at God testing my blood pressure this early in the weekend.” Natasha’s eyes swept the scene—rosé, laughter, aging beauty in motion—and landed on Ava. “You must be Ava St. James. The fifth chapter in Marcus’s ongoing anthology.” Delphine muttered, “And she must be the preface nobody read twice.”

With the help of the lightning flashes, I hit record, zoomed in, and captured the license plate. On the screen, I saw the man toss Dorothy into the back like a piece of luggage. My heart jerked violently, pain stabbing with every beat. Then, I shifted the camera and caught another scene. Chester's assistant stood by the van, handing the leader a thick envelope. The moment the recording ended, it felt like my insides were burning. "Hang in there, Dottie… Mommy will save you. Just wait a few more hours, okay?" I watched the van disappear into the rain. I didn't chase it and throw my life away. I knew, for a fact, that I needed power—someone who could crush Chester and make that van stop.

I sighed as I picked a random show and laid down on my stomach, snatching a pillow and placing it below my elbows before resting my head. I grunted as I paused the show immediately, knowing it wouldn't catch even the slightest of my interest. I continued to scroll through the movie options, deciding to choose one that would at least keep me awake. Eventually, a show called "Too Hot To Handle" caught my eye. I pressed "ok" as I threw the remote to the side, watching the show halfheartedly. For its big size, this place was pretty damn boring. • • •
