The room was stifling, each second stretching into an eternity, and the faint hum of fluorescent lights only sharpened the edge of my nerves.
Then came the bang on the door.
I glanced back at Claude one last time, the subtle rise and fall of his chest grounding me, before I moved. Pressing myself against the wall, I noticed a narrow slider built into the door—cheap and makeshift, as if whoever put me here expected trouble.
They weren’t wrong.
The slider creaked open, and a head popped through. Dark eyes swept the room, hesitating just long enough for me to strike.
