Outside, Elda and the two mysterious men were finally turning around and starting to move away from the lawn, heading toward the edge of the thick woods. This was my chance. I quickly glided toward the bedroom door, reaching out to twist the brass knob. I had to be incredibly careful because the old wood was squeaking loudly under the slightest pressure. Holding my breath, I turned the handle by millimeters, opening the door just wide enough to slip my body through before closing it behind me with agonizing slowness.

"I’m on the last one." No answer came through the steel door. Just that heavy, wet rasping sound against the exterior panel. It was getting slower. It sounded like a watch battery finally running out of juice. Three. I slammed the dial home. The magnetic deadbolts didn't just slide; they exploded back into the wall frame with a deafening, metallic roar that shook the iron hinges. The heavy steel door popped open two inches, a thin sliver of the hallway's emergency red light cutting across my black silk gown like a laser line.

The wall began to move upward, below it rose a metal door. It screeched as it continued rising until finally the wall that had been there minutes ago was replaced by two solid metal sliding doors. Another keypad sat right above a handle.

The evaluation period was halfway through and would be over in almost ten days. While Adina was deep in thought, she suddenly felt a cold win sweep through the window. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the master bedroom were already fixed, but the place had been converted to a balcony with a sliding door. The window near the door was always kept closed. When she looked up, she noticed that the sliding door had been pushed open and a dark silhouette appeared on the window. Adina’s eyes widened, and she leapt to her feet. She tried running away.

The door swung shut. The lock engaged. I heard it clearly: the clean, absolute click of a bolt sliding home. I crossed the room in three steps and slammed both palms against the door, pushing, already certain it wouldn't budge, feeling how completely solid it was. Heavy. Sealed. Built to hold. "Jesse." My voice came out flat. "Open the door." Two seconds of silence.
