My small press book was doing modestly well—enough to pay the rent, enough to keep me writing, enough to feel like I wasn’t failing. My apartment was in Capitol Hill, a tiny one‑bedroom with creaky floors and a window that faced a brick wall. But inside, I’d made it mine. Bookshelves lined every wall. Plants hung from the ceiling. A worn armchair sat by the window, where I read and wrote and watched the rain. It wasn’t glamorous. But it was mine. I met Priya at a coffee shop on my second day in the city. She was behind the counter, making latte art with furious concentration. Her hair was bright pink, her nails painted black, and she wore a T‑shirt that said “Books Before Boys.”

The room was small and Anthony Jr. hadn't done anything to make it feel large. He had a twin bed, a massive book shelf stuff with DVDs and comics and a variety of other things, and a large desk for his computers. There was only a couple of square feet of space in the middle of the room to walk around. And that (like everything else in the room) was covered in dirty clothes, Mountain Dew cans, and empty Doritos bags. I had given up on asking him to clean it up.

"Can I come in?" "Please," I said. "Sorry. Come in." She came in and looked around the apartment with the attentive interest of someone who understood that spaces said things about the people who lived in them. She looked at the flowers on the counter and Isla's drawings on the wall and the slightly uneven curtain rail I had never gotten around to fixing and the whole accumulated texture of a life lived fully in a small space. "It's wonderful," she said. Like she meant it completely. "It's small," I said.

He shook her from his mind and pushed open the doors to the study. The rug-lined room was bigger than B’s above-garage apartment. Floor to ceiling bookshelves dampened any noise B might made in his whiskey search. There didn’t seem to be a single inch of space on any one of the shelves. Books of all colors, textures, and sizes were packed together. In front of the book spines sat hundreds of little treasures–seashells, pocket watches, glass figurines, and carvings of creatures. The tiny bar was a focal point without taking over the living area thanks to its functional design, which allowed it to mix in perfectly with the overall aesthetic. Through all the hard work and growth and change that this place brought me, he was the best part. We finally arrived in front of a huge door as he gently pulled at it to reveal the library. The library door creaked open, revealing a sight that left me utterly awestruck. My initial perception of a "small" library was immediately shattered. This was a haven of books and knowledge that stretched beyond imagination. The room was colossal, with towering bookshelves that seemed to reach up to the heavens themselves. Each shelf was neatly organized, displaying an impressive collection of books. The scent of old and new pages intermingled in the air, creating an atmosphere that was both comforting and enchanting.

It only had one bedroom and a small bathroom that couldn’t even fit the both of them in there comfortably at the same time. The kitchen had about a square foot of counter space, and their belongings had to be carefully organized so that they weren't cluttered. It was small to Jessica, who had spent the majority of her life growing up in a small apartment with her parents until they decided to move to the town and they moved into a slightly larger townhouse together. So she couldn’t imagine how cramped it felt to Kai who had grown up with this.

Emily used the small drawer beneath the coffee table to store their stationery and art supplies while she arranged their books in the space where newspapers and TV remotes used to be. The TV remote was in a spare apron that Emily hung up by the coat rack near the door with other important items like keys and air conditioning remotes. The place looked more child-friendly, with sharp objects out of children’s reach. The additional space made the small house feel less claustrophobic. The kitchen was also rearranged to Emily’s preference. The more common items were in easily accessible places. More mugs and pots were on the drying rack compared to before.
