For the mainstream hits that get everybody talking, 'Icebreaker' and 'A Touch of Darkness' are everywhere, and they're usually available through libraries or regular retailers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. But the real underground stuff, the truly spicy or niche tropes, you gotta go where readers are deep in the weeds.

I've had more luck in dedicated Kindle Unlimited romance groups on Facebook than on TikTok itself. TikTok points you in the direction, but those groups will drop entire lists with trigger warnings and spice ratings. Someone will just post 'looking for mafia romance with primal play' and get fifty replies with specific author names.

My last great find came from a comment on a 'dark academia' TikTok where someone casually mentioned 'Does It Hurt?' by H.D. Carlton. Would've missed it otherwise. It feels like chasing whispers sometimes.

Carlton got a weirdly large boost from being a 'secretly sweet' dark romance with actual consent talks buried under all the violence. That feels like the real trend, plots that justify the kink through worldbuilding rather than just throwing in a gratuitous scene.

I feel like people on TikTok are stuck in a loop recommending the same five books sometimes. Sure, 'Icebreaker' and 'Things We Never Got Over' are everywhere, and they're fun for a specific dynamic, but there's so much more out there. I get tired of the algorithm pushing only contemporary bully or sports romance as the peak of 'spicy'.

Lately, I've been diving into monster romance, which has a massive underground following that BookTok is slowly catching onto. 'A Soul to Keep' by Opal Reyne is a much darker, more atmospheric kind of spicy, with genuine world-building that makes the tension feel earned, not just slapped on. The Orc Sworn series by Finley Fenn is another one—it's shamelessly over-the-top with its possessive orcs and feisty heroines, and the prose is surprisingly witty. It's a different flavor of desire, more primal and less polished than the billionaire CEO stuff.

For me, the real gems are in fantasy and sci-fi erotica where the spice is woven into the plot. 'The Bonds That Tie' series is a perfect example—it's a dark paranormal why-choose romance with intense power dynamics and morally gray characters. The emotional stakes are high, which makes the physical moments hit harder. Those books get shared in corners of TikTok, but they're not yet the default recommendation, which is a shame.
