As the soldier finished speaking, a surge of energy emanated from him and his fellow soldiers. Adrian shook his head and sighed. These people were strong but rotten to the core. The massive six-wheeled vehicle jackknifed, skidding sideways and slamming into a concrete pillar with the sound of tearing metal. "First blood," Ren whispered, cycling the bolt. Clack-clack. A smoking brass casing hit the floor. "They're stopping to deploy." The rear doors of the other four APCs burst open. Soldiers poured out like black oil. They didn't look like police. They wore heavy grey urban camouflage and full-face respirators with glowing red lenses. They moved with terrifying speed—efficient, synchronized, professional. Level 50 Elites. "Contact front!" a soldier shouted, his voice muffled by the gas mask. "Suppressive fire on the crash site! Move! Move!"

To them we were just shadows. We reached the central storage bay. It was a massive hangar. In the center sat a device. It looked like a missile without fins. It was silver and sleek. It was hooked up to a series of tanks filled with green gas. And standing next to it was Garrett Vance. He was wearing a hazmat suit with the helmet off. He was typing on a keypad attached to the missile. He was surrounded by six Reapers. These were the elite. They wore black armor and held heavy energy weapons.

She used her command to cut the strings. One by one, the Null soldiers stopped moving. Their rifles fell from their hands. The blue light in their eyes faded to gray, and they collapsed into the snow, not dead, but empty. They were no longer weapons; they were just men again, finally free from the Council’s grip. In the sky, the Reaper warships began to wobble. Without the link to their soldiers, the complex systems started to fail. Sparks showered from their engines, and they began to retreat, heading back toward the city like wounded birds.
