The man was dressed in a black uniform with gold-rims around the collar and sleeves. He wore an imperial military helmet made of shiny metal. His gloved fingers curled around a decorated Shashka. It didn't help lessen my anxiety either when I recognized him. The vampire was the merciless General Konstantin himself.

More soldiers came running from the eastern towers, heavily armoured, they drew their weapons at me. I recognized several of them immediately, they were Ironblood elites, all experienced warriors. Men who had spent years hearing stories about me while secretly believing those stories belonged to another century. Then they saw me move.

“To watch over your affairs, Sir. I’m your loyal soldier.” Cameo lowers his head. Remorse flickering over him. “Loyal soldier. Remember that next time you bring up matters that don’t concern your job description.” My tone darkens with warning. He nods calmly. Then I turn my back to him. I hear him walking away. Rage, denial, something unsteady, all of it floods through me. I don’t want to register the feelings clawing at my chest, but they linger stubbornly. Something soft. Something warm.

Without even a second thought Alexander was pouncing at the being, going head to head with the warriors with his bare hands as its weapon was only able to scratch his skin. Though it seemed like he had the upper hand, the being’s blade was starting to cut deeper the longer the fight took place.
