Callen lifted her staff. “We go to the Forging Depths. Beneath the crypt, where the first bearer died.”
John’s voice was firm. “Then show me the way.”
They descended stairs narrower than memory, roots clasping the walls, the air fermented with age.
At the bottom, a chamber larger than grief. Bones cradled the walls. Carvings of wolves, moons, sacrifice. At the center lay a pedestal of black marble, the echo shimmering above it. It looked like a gold flame on water.
