The front of the stable was designed so that the chapel was across the courtyard. Kai was mesmerized by the grandeur of the stables, unlike anything he had ever seen before. He stepped through a vaulted ground floor and found a storage yard where shiny harnesses hung. A mixture of fragrances filled the air: horse, hay, leather and polish. There is a marble communal drinking fountain for the stables at the back of the yard, next to which are separate entrances to the stables. Kai walked across the stones on the floor illuminated by torches, barely making the sound of footsteps as was the habit of Bow Street policemen.
