I greet softly, the formal address still tasting strange on my tongue.
She turns her head slightly, and there’s recognition, but it’s the kind you give to a uniform, not a person. Being Head Guardian is the only reason I’m allowed in here without someone breathing down my neck.
I take the chair across from her, keeping my posture disciplined but softening my tone. “It’s a clear day. If you listen, you can almost hear the fountains.”
Her eyes drift back toward the window, unfocused.
I wait, counting the seconds, before I speak again. “There’s a song,” I say quietly, “you used to hum when the rains came late. Something about the moon finding her way home.”
