Her father’s eyes softened, just for a fraction of a second, and in that moment, Amara thought she saw the man she had known as a child, the one who carried her on his shoulders, who told her stories of their ancestors, who said she could conquer the world if only she remembered whose blood ran in her veins.
He let out a long breath, as though the answer he had both dreaded and expected had finally been spoken. “Love,” he said, his voice low, “is powerful. But so is family.”
